Unethical and counter-productive

Mar 13, 2019

March is Women’s History Month, and while many are looking at how far we’ve come, I am admittedly hung up on how much work still needs to be done.

We have an unprecedented number of Women serving in Congress – 40% of whom are in the Democratic Caucus. But more broadly, with only 131 women out of 435 – we’re still miles away from real balance.

Teams with diverse perspectives and backgrounds provide a more complete picture of a problem, and help develop holistic solutions. Yet some of my colleagues in Congress work to disempower or further marginalize women by supporting legislation that upholds out dated structures of institutionalized sexism.

The Equal Rights Amendment is a simple example. It seeks to end the legal distinctions based on gender in terms of property, employment, and other personal or professional matters.

The Equal Rights Amendment was first proposed in 1923 and has yet to be fully ratified: sign your name and show your support for full ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
