I'm Michelle Kwan and I endorse Harley Rouda

Sep 24, 2018

I’m Michelle Kwan. You might remember me from my figure skating career. More recently, I’ve become a Special Olympics advocate, political activist, and international diplomat.

My story is the American story. My parents immigrated to the United States from Hong Kong in search of a better life. My siblings and I were raised in Southern California speaking Cantonese and English.

Through great sacrifice and the generosity of others, my working-class parents managed to cover the costs of skating-rink time and coaching so I could pursue my own American Dream of becoming a championship figure skater.

As a first-generation American who was encouraged to dream big, I’ve become passionate about providing opportunities for others. Every little girl and boy deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

But in Trump and Dana Rohrabacher’s vision of America, opportunity is restricted to the wealthiest, most connected – and let’s face it – whitest Americans.

As a Californian, there is no way I could sit on the sidelines as Dana Rohrabacher embarrasses my state with his ties to Putin and Russia, and his record of discriminating against women, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, and “others.”

That’s why I’m a huge fan of Harley Rouda. I see in Harley a man who understands that real leadership means standing up for “others,” advancing health care, jobs, and education so everyone has a chance at the American dream.

Harley Rouda will be a champion for the people of Orange County. He’ll work to put an end to the division that defeats us all.
