LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Last Friday, Michelle Steel callously joked about how her relatively mild experience after contracting COVID-19 justifies dismissing the extraordinary risks of the virus, including the hundreds of thousands of dead Americans.
In a Zoom call with Orange County business leaders, Steel called coronavirus her “diet plan” and said “I went through this Covid for the last two weeks and, you know what, 99 percent of the people they survive. […] It’s a very good way to lose your weight.”
Former Congressman Harley Rouda released the following statement criticizing Steel’s out-of-touch remarks:
“More than 400,000 Americans – including 3,000 in Orange County – have died as a result of this virus. This is no time for flippant remarks.
As the head of Orange County’s coronavirus response, Michelle Steel should have protected us – instead, she’s making jokes as families bury their loved ones, businesses are crushed, and millions face unemployment.”
