Congress will not be intimidated

Last night, I attended my first State of the Union address. In keeping with the President's proclivity for burgers: this speech was all bun and no beef.

He failed to address some of the greatest threats to Americans — climate change, gun violence, and the opioid crisis.

Instead, Trump made efforts to evoke "unity," while calling upon Congress to abandon our duty to exercise oversight — put simply, to be complicit in any scheme he cooks up.

In reality, his Presidency stands as a beacon of division with no real solutions.

To say nothing of his government shutdown, which only highlighted that his "wall" is simply a monument to his ego.

The real State of the Union was evidenced by the guests in the room. They represented the state of our union. In them, we saw stories on the importance of health care, commonsense gun reform, caring for the environment, and compassionate immigration policies.

For them, and the millions of people they represent, Congress will not back down.
