LAGUNA BEACH, CA -- Shortly after rolling out a formidable endorsement from Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley just last week, today technology entrepreneur and Democrat Harley Rouda scored a major endorsement from former United States Congressman Pete McCloskey in his bid for California's 48th Congressional District seat.

A native Southern Californian and 8-term Republican Congressman from 1967 to 1983, McCloskey left the Party in 2007 over the actions of his former congressional colleagues, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, in endorsing the use of torture as a presidential prerogative under the Constitution.

McCloskey was born in San Bernardino, where his grandfather was the Republican Mayor and grew up in South Pasadena.Young McCloskey was a frequenter of the surfing beaches at Newport and Balboa. As an attorney, he presently represents Huntington Beach-based Surfriders' Association in its effort to force billionaire Vinod Koshla to reopen historic Martins Beach to public use.

"The new Republicanism of Trump and Rohrabacher is an insult to the party of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan," McCloskey said. "It is time for Rohrabacher to be seen by Republican voters for what he is, and permitted to retire and share in Trump's appreciation of their several Russian connections."

McCloskey served as a Marine rifle platoon leader in the Korean War and received the Navy Cross, Silver Star, and two Purple Hearts. He was Co-Chairman of the first Earth Day in 1970 and was co-author of the Endangered Species Act, the Coastal Zone Protection Act and several other landmark environmental bills in the 1970s. McCloskey was the first Republican to rise on the House floor and suggest the impeachment of Richard Nixon in June 1973. A year later, the House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach Nixon for that obstruction of justice.

Former Congressman McCloskey, now 90, added. "Harley Rouda has demonstrated both integrity and high competence and will be a breath of fresh air for that position in the dismal swamp Rohrabacher so prominently occupies."

Recently, a new poll from the Rouda for Congress campaign showed that Congressman Dana Rohrabacher is in serious trouble in his re-election bid, with the incumbent and technology entrepreneur Harley Rouda in a statistical tie – with Rohrabacher leading 48% to 44%. The survey, conducted by Tulchin Research, also showed Rouda taking a 50% to 46% lead over Rohrabacher after messaging. The full poll memo can be viewed here.

Rouda's campaign has amassed wide-ranging support, including from: Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley, Laguna Beach Mayor Toni Iseman, former Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang, past Orange County Democratic Party Chair Frank Barbaro (Ret.), Orange County based former California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Ocean View School District Board Trustee Gina Clayton-Tarvin, Centralia School District Board of Trustee Steve Harris, M.ED, Laguna Beach Democratic Club President * Dr. Gary LeFebvre, Chair of the Democratic Foundation* Dan Jacobson, and Erwin Chemerinsky, Founder of the University of California (UC) Irvine Law School and current University of California (UC) Berkeley Law School Dean.

Beyond endorsements from key Democratic leaders and a far-reaching coalition of grassroots activists, Rouda has lined up an extensive roster of support from organizations that represent working families, including: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 441, the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 36, the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 12, United Association (UA) of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry (UA) Local 582, and the United Steelworkers Los Angeles/ Orange Counties Legislative Education Committee.

When it comes to fundraising, Harley Rouda recently reported the most cumulative resources raised and the most cash-on-hand out of all Democratic candidates running for the 48th Congressional district, including raising roughly $100,000 more than Congressman Rohrabacher's third quarter of 2017.

In addition to building up an expansive alliance of support, along with his strong position in recent polling and fundraising, Rouda has released two digital video ads, including a hard-hitting video, titled "2 Plans," where he slams incumbent Dana Rohrabacher for backing Trumpcare, also known as the House GOP's American Health Care Act (AHCA).
